Inspiration turned to Action
6 months ago, I had jested about a piece that talked about losing weight. 2 months later, something suddenly clicked, and I went on a rampage. Today, I have got rid of a reasonable amount of flab, and the feel-good factor positively fills the day.
So how I did it? V. simple...
I started to watch what I ate. I know, everybody says that! But for a lazy lump like me, food is the easiest thing to give up. So I began by cutting down on my meals. I would not finish everything on my plate, just because it is there. Call me nashukra, but overeating is one of the problems. The restaurants serve large portions per person, but I don't want to eat so much. I would opt to eat non-cheesy macroni, no-cheese in my Subway or McDonald burger and absolutely no downing slices of cheese while watching flicks on the computer. I even reduced the size of the cheesy dip bottle by half, and reduced the frequency of taco-availability in my kitchen. If this sounds like I was still eating a lot of fatty food, I am; just reducing the -ve impact (slowly, but surely).
I also gave up fizzy drinks, that means no more Happy Meal toy for me :( unless of course, my companion doesn't mind drinking it. I used to have my whiskey with water and a sweet cola. This was until I was introduced to the world of good scotch with ice and water. As my friend says, "You will experience the flavour bursting from within the icy coolness".
These minor lifestyle changes were already showing signs of working. That was when I made a dramatic decision - I shall not buy chocolates any more. For a chocoholic this is a suicide. I have a habit (actually addiction) of wandering into grocery stores and picking up things, and ending up at the chocolate counter, trying out the latest in the market, and of course stocking up my favourties. So this one had to go if I was anywhere close to losing weight. But there is a small loophole here...I cannot buy chocolates, but I can be gifted chocolates. This rule was mainly in lieu of a family holiday in January where my bro/bhabhi and her parents were visiting from abroad. I can't NOT accept chocs from them, right? ;) Also, now I remind friends that if they are meeting me, they better remember to pick up ....(whatever I am in a mood for that day). If you thought this was a sneaky way of eating chocs and making others pay for it, its not, really. I now don't even look towards the chocolate counter, so the urge has automatically dwindled. The pangs of chocolate deficiency only crop up on one of those days. Else, I don't miss them much.
Sweets are still allowed, though I'm not that big a fan of India sweets. Sugar has disappeared from my milk in the mornings. And less coffee cups make appearance on my desk which means less sugar and caffine as well. I also made an effort to walk whereever possible, rather than jump into an auto.
But most of all, I must thank my new workplace for the rigorousness of shaking up my lazy ass. It has seriously done me wonders. My workspace is on the 3rd level, and there is no lift (so exercise already begins there, first thing in the morning). The senior management is in another building, about 100 meters away, so every now and again I have to spring along to go and meet them. That building has a lift, but starts only from floor 1, so I got to walk up anyways. And 75% of the time the lift is getting repaired, is jammed, or we're running on a generator, so I have to sprint till floor 3 there as well. Then, if we are to have bigger meetings, that is in another building, more like a bungalow, which of course does not have a lift. My colleagues have been nice enough not to make me feel comfortable and friendly; so I rarely go out with them for a meal. And when we do, its to a tiny South Indian joint with basics [which does not include dosa], so I end up eating a plate of idli.
On most other days I walk out for a kilometer and eat a sandwich at a fast food joint with juice and then walk back, or pick a packet of biscuits from the grocery store. And if I'm feeling too lazy or bored, I just don't eat. Simple as that!
Result - I have lost 2-inches around the waist, buttocks and thighs. Had to get myself a wardrobe revamp as my pants were literally hanging on my butt.
Wanna give this crazy lifestyle a try? My advice - Don't!
